As more doctors are implementing telehealth in their practices, you may find yourself having to participate in a virtual visit with your doctor for the first time. Many practices have very comprehensive instructions on how to download the app and schedule the appointment. Once that is done, you may be wondering how to get the most out of a televisit. Here are the top tips for making the most of your virtual visit with your doctor.
Location, Location, Location: Find a quiet spot where you can speak freely with your doctor. Good lighting and quiet will be key to making sure you can see your doctor and they can see you in return.
Be Tech-Ready: Whether you’re going to participate via laptop, iPad or phone, make sure that the camera and microphone are working before your virtual visit. Most telehealth platforms provide a testing option before your calls.
Know The Basics: Think about the kinds of information that your doctor’s office will screen right at the beginning of your visit. Do you have your insurance card ready? Can you weigh yourself, check your height, take your temperature and even check your blood pressure if you have a blood pressure cuff at home? If you have a rash or sore throat symptoms, have a flashlight near you so you can shine extra light to show the doctor. Remind the doctor at the beginning of your appointment about any pre-existing conditions you might have so they can properly evaluate you.
Access Your Prescriptions: If you’re speaking to your doctor about current existing conditions, consider having your medication right near you during your video call. This allows you to talk through the medication, doses and side effects.
Take Notes: Prior to the call, create a list of your questions and symptoms so you’re ready for the doctor’s appointment. Also have a pen ready to capture any feedback, directions or follow-ups that are provided by your doctor during the visit.
Televisits are an easy and productive way to get the healthcare you need when you need it. It also ensures that you’re not missing valuable doctor check-ins for pre-existing conditions that require monitoring. Don’t be surprised that a doctor still may need to see you in person for follow up appointments. Take this opportunity to ask the doctor about the procedures they have in place to protect you and their staff from any unnecessary exposure. With a few preparations, you can have a successful televisit every time.
